What are Semaglutide & Tirzepatide?
Both medications mimic the action of hormones produced by your body, known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and Gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP). They are currently FDA-approved for obesity and type-2 diabetes. These medications stimulate insulin secretion when blood sugar levels rise after eating, helping to lower blood sugar levels. Both can also induce metabolic changes that lead to weight loss, with results varying based on the medication used and the dosage. Additionally, GLP-1s & GIPs have shown benefits in reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and improving blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Who Can Benefit from Semaglutide or Tirzepatide?
These medications can benefit non-pregnant adults with a body mass index (BMI) above 30 or a BMI above 27 with weight-related health issues, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, and more.
Who Should Not Use Semaglutide or Tirzepatide?
Either medication is not recommended for individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN), a history of pancreatitis or pancreatic tumors, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or those with allergies to Semaglutide, Tirzepatide, or any other ingredients in the medication. Consultation with your healthcare professional is crucial to determine the right treatment for you. Note, Tirzepatide can lower the effect of birth control pills.
How are Semaglutide & Tirzepatide Administered?
Both Semaglutide & Tirzepatide are administered as a subcutaneous injection in weekly titratable doses. The initial dosage is low and gradually increased as tolerated. It’s important to remember that the best results are achieved when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise. If the medication does not work or if side effects are intolerable, your practitioner will explore alternative options or adjust the protocol to suit your specific needs.
Duration of Semaglutide or Tirzepatide Use
The FDA has approved Semaglutide and Tirzepatide for chronic use in patients with obesity or type 2 diabetes. It is considered safe and effective when used as indicated and under medical supervision.
